U.S. Alliances

Corporate (U.S.)

Novo Nordisk is dedicated to educating Americans about the importance of diabetes education, prevention, and management. A key ongoing initiative in this regard is our high-profile partnership with the Entertainment Industry Foundation to develop the national Diabetes Aware campaign. Launched in 2004 with Halle Berry as its first ambassador, Diabetes Aware features A-list celebrities and organizations in public service campaigns to communicate our diabetes messages.

Novo Nordisk has entered into several licensing or collaboration agreements with leading healthcare companies to help improve diabetes management in the United States. We recently entered into an agreement with Medtronic Diabetes to develop the first prefilled cartridges designed for use with the company's Paradigm® insulin pumps, while conducting clinical studies and expanding medical education to highlight the benefits of maintaining good blood glucose control in people with diabetes. Additionally, we have a distribution agreement with Bedford Laboratories, a division of Ben Venue Laboratories, Inc., a subsidiary of Boehringer Ingelheim Corporation, which markets GlucaGen(glucagon [rDNA origin] for injection), a hormone that raises blood glucose levels.

Always a pioneer in scientific innovation, Novo Nordisk has entered into preliminary collaborations with United States biotechnology-based research companies, resulting in many technological advances. These include our work with research and development companies on phage display technology, the formulation of therapeutic proteins, the generation of human monoclonal antibodies, and computational chemistry modeling.

Clinical & Academic:

Several years ago, Novo Nordisk entered into a strategic alliance with the Mayo Clinic in the field of evidence-based medicine with a focus on diabetes. The cornerstone of the partnership was clinical projects with a focus on the jointly developed Diabetes Electronic Management System and clinical outcome studies. The parties also established a research center and a continuing medical education program in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes. Additionally, Novo Nordisk is the exclusive sponsor of comprehensive educational programs in diabetes management for family medicine residents and for pharmacy students. These include our grant to the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors to develop "Frontline: Diabetes," a series of 45 diabetes preceptorships that will directly impact 2250 physicians. For pharmacists in training, we sponsor “An Elective Course in Comprehensive Diabetes Management,” being developed by the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Finally, Novo Nordisk provides an educational grant to Washington Hospital Center, which sponsors www.diabetesroundtable.com to support continuing medical education for health care providers.

Scholarship Programs:

Novo Nordisk supports higher learning institutions in their efforts to reward academic excellence while also inspiring students to consider dedicating their careers to diabetes research, education, and treatment. We have established Novo Nordisk diabetes scholarship funds for medical students at historically black colleges and in Puerto Rico. Additionally, Novo Nordisk sponsors scholarships with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores to recognize the importance of pharmacists in diabetes management. Finally, we sponsor the Novo Nordisk Donnelly Awards in association with World Team Tennis Charities. Presented annually by tennis legend Billie Jean King, these awards were created to encourage children with diabetes to lead active lives.

Third-party organizations

Diabetes

Novo Nordisk has been recognized by some of the nation's leading nonprofit health associations for our advocacy and support of various research, educational, and fundraising programs. These organizations include the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American Association of Diabetes Educators, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the Joslin Diabetes Center. Projects with the American Diabetes Association include the Doing Better: Tools For Diabetes Care program and an educational and behavioral science research project currently under way. Novo Nordisk also supports this Association and the National Committee for Quality Assurance in their joint initiative to recognize physicians and physician groups that demonstrate consistent treatment of people with diabetes. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists is our partner in a number of initiatives, including a program to help curb childhood obesity, a post-graduate scholarship program, and various medical conferences.

Biopharmaceuticals

Along with our commitment to diabetes-related initiatives, Novo Nordisk significantly supports other therapeutic areas where we can make a difference. We have a strong relationship with the National Hemophilia Foundation, supporting their "It's Time for a Cure” Campaign and many other important programs for the bleeding disorders community. Additional organizations we sponsor include the Hemophilia Federation of America, the MAGIC Foundation, The Human Growth Foundation, the Pituitary Network, The Hormone Foundation, and the National Stroke Association to provide research, provide education, clinical care services, and patient advocacy.

Trade, Managed Care, and Government

Novo Nordisk works together with several national pharmacy and retail chains, including Rite Aid and Wal-Mart stores, to improve care and upgrade therapy for those retailers' insulin-using customers. Additionally, we collaborate with many managed care, government, and group purchasing organizations to support their diabetes care initiatives.
